Great proximity to downtown Hilo and very friendly staff. The breakfast was terrific and the banana bread is so dense you might consider weight training in advance of your arrival. The decor is dated but in a cool way and with a few accents could be counted as agreeably retro. The room was massive and clean and the water pressure/heat in the shower was top notch. The cat is super friendly which is a very pleasant addition to breakfast.

So I really loved this place. The staff was so friendly and helpful - they treated us like family. There is no air conditioning and no elevator and it probably was not as immaculate or as perfect a bed as an upscale place but it had a very special charm of its own and was an easy walk to downtown restaurants. We were serenaded at night by the Coqui but if you don't like to hear the frogs they have provided earplugs in the medicine cabinet in the bathroom. Our room faced the "jungle", which we loved but other rooms may not have the symphony so much. Without AC it was clearly necessary to keep windows open and fan on all night. Fresh bananas and papaya continuously available in the courtyard and wonderful banana bread in the mornings with coffee or tea or hot chocolate. I would definitely stay here again if I went back. And the money I would save by not staying at a fancy hotel could probably buy another helicopter trip.
